That event brought out the worst in everyone.

Territorial people staked out their claim and yelled at anyone who came near.

Predatorial people had a field day grabbing presents out from underneath unsuspecting people who weren't quick enough with their mouse.

I'm all for random chance events, but when someone you just saw grab a present out from under your feet 5 minutes ago is saying in chat they have 86 presents, while you only have ...1... is just a tad annoying. I liked the way they did it for Wintersday. You could just stand in the central area, look around OH! NEAT! MY NAME! run over and grab it and get excited at your new possession. In Shing Jea I think it just made everyone, but a few, miserable.

And after attending seven or so of those events, I'm pretty sure they dropped where people were, not only at spawn points. I saw a lot of people running past leaving presents in their wake, and a lot of people standing still with a bunch of presents spawning at their feet. Though I did also notice fixed spawn ponts, so i think it worked both ways.

Personally, I'm hoping that it was just a left over from the old code they forgot/choose not to/ didn't change becuase they were busy making GW:EN and GW2 better.

***edit***

On Wintersday when the presents dropped for the AFK people, the assignment cleared after 20 minutes or so just like with normal loot, and people happily stayed around to pick them up. The only time I saw hundreds of presents just sitting anywhere were those 2 inaccsesable ledges in Kamadan, but Gaile and one of her cohorts collected them and gave them away as donations after the festivities.

I think the unassigned present was a moment of Anets lazyness.

I think the whole event was just a quick copy of last year, its evident they learnt from the previous ones and improved for wintersday.

First final i ran round getting charges then ran round trying to get a gift for it
After that i just waited through the charges part letting everyone else do that work then pressed "Space Bar" over and over on a known spawn point
I made 9k from presents, so at 1k chance being 5% i must of got around 450 presents overall

While i made alot of profit from these 1k rewards and selling the wine i would prefer if the next festival the gifts are assigned
Having them unassigned didn't make people want to chat as tey had to get it the second it spawned and made lots of people yell abuse at you for getting more than them

Is that what you wanted from the final, Anet
To see how offencive some players could be?

On a side note i saw an incriddible usage of the n-word over this weekend specially in the final, Anet i really think you want to try assigning presents in the future or we can expect more abuse every festival?
Festivals keep me playing they are well spaced and a break from the normal grind that is titles (i'm talking about attending the actually festival not AFK'ing 9 rings)
That being said i have only played for 7 months and seen 3 festivals (Wintersday, Canthan New Year and the Dragon Festival) and while i think the Wintersday was most fun, followed by New Year and Dragon lagging way behind i am wondering if my guild mates don't like festivals as much as me simply because they have seen more of them and are tired of the abuse
(not to mention the "wur cn i gt da hat" people that spam the festival towns)

/Not signed, its nice to have a bit of variety between events and it stops the thousands of afkers from being assigned pressies which there clearly not bothered about

We dont all have time to stand around for 20 minutes waiting for them to "un-assign" Once they do it becomes a even larger swarm of people scrambling over them than there was during unassigned pressies dropping making people with lag even less likely to pick those up.

Getting pressies was super easy even with lag, all u had to do was find a quiet spot and just pick up the ones that spawn by u. (all pressies spawn within a Radious of any player or NPC in the town) There was plenty of quiet spots around the place, rather than trying to compete for lots and losing them all due to lag all its simpler to just move away and gain the ones spawned for u.

Well, more for the people who do. No system's gonna be perfect and make everyone happy; I know that already. But the majority should be, and if 5 people get 1-5 gifts while one other one racks up over 100, there's not gonna be much festivity. People complaining and raging made it so not fun that I actually logged out in the middle of the gift dropping.

Also, I'm not sure what sort of lag others get (I haven't played too much lately and missed the nasty spikes people were talking about), but mine generally doesn't last 20 or even 10 minutes. Even the nastiest laggers on 56k should be able to get to and pick up their presents in time if they're assigned.

And trust me, plenty of people spend all day and attend every drop, so like Operative 14 said, the presents never stack up unless they land somewhere inaccessible. Someone's always there to pick one up as soon as the assignment clears.

By 3 PM(ish) EST, there was no such thing as finding a quiet spot or not struggling with lag. I can only imagine how nasty it got in the evening. I had an out-of-the-way area not far from the merchants that worked well in the morning, but by the afternoon everyone was camping it and the sniping/raging was just as bad as it was in the square.

Unassigned gifts was only bad if people were lagging, since obviously they wouldn't be getting much. If lag wasn't an issue, it isn't hard to get gifts. Sugar Rush + Sugar Jolt + ; + Space = Best Friend.

I was one of the fortunate ones who didn't have any lag at all this weekend, but I do see where most of the complainers are coming from. If I was getting gipped from lag too I would be here complaining as well.

Yesterday i moved to a less populated spot (since presents drop by your feet anyway) and i didn't move much. And everytime i didn't move much there came some nitwit who thought i was afk so they could steal the present. And they all quickly ran to another "afk'er" everytime i moved even a little bit so they could see that i wasn't afk....

It's a festival so everyone deserves the same reward. And don't say that presents aren't worth something, because there is still a small chance you will get 1K which can be a lot of money for some starters (And also for people who like to have a good arsenal of skills, so they can play a bit with their builds :P)

Or like the new year where they appeared in inventory

New Year was amazing with the huge conga of characters following the Celesial Pig, to me that was the meaning of a festival. Everyone staying after they got their reward and just having a laugh, following the pig did nothing more than just be fun to see, there was no bonus in staying but people did
Sadly this year didn't feel like that

Whatever you took out of the magic formula that made New Year so great please bring it back for the next festival

I went to the first 3 but couldn't stand the abuse
And for the next poster who is going to say "then turn Local chat off" that isn't the point
Festivals should be fun like following the pig @ Canthan new year not a scream insults fest

I most admit I joined the sugar rush on presents after a disappointing first round, but this is not really a fair way to do it. Let the presents appear in your inventory or as assigned drops is much more fair.

Heh... I just went to the 9 circles and starting mashing SPACE.

The new autotarget system made the rest. More than 500 gifts picked that way, XD.

Ok now imagin the universe expands beyond your self and take the majority of GW'ers into account

I'm sure i got more than my share in the 2nd two times i tried it but soon as i got my ST R1 i just didn't want to put up with the abuse
While i got more than my share i still would like them to be assigned as there is more to the event than just how many gifts I got. The atmosphere for one. I'm sorry you can't see past your own profits

Wow, no need to get testy. While I agree with you that it should be fun for everyone and not just sugar rushers raping autoselect, I don't think Mithran meant it that way.

Just about everyone on 9 Rings goes AFK anyway, so it's far less drama.

No. I mant that is not 'hard' to get the gifts.

People fail to get them because they are greedy.
If you don't move and stay in one spot, a gift will appear sooner or later near you.

If you run around triying to get them all, people that are already near them will pick them.

I picked so many of them because I forgot about the ones that were far away, letting other pick them, and focusesd in one small area.

Everyone can get sugar items, everyone can run around, everyone can pik them.

What would happend with the unclaimed gifts? Dissapear? Become unclaimed?
Ah... then, once the owner leaves, it would become unclaimed and be te same again.

And where would your gifts appear? By you? Everywhere in the outpost?
Nah. The currnt system is as fine as can be.

Unassigned presents only lead to bad blood and ruin the festival spirit. Especially in an event like this where we've just had had the sugar rush grab fest with the celestial charges for victory tokens.

People failed to get presents because they were lagging/not using Sugar rush and autoselect and because the gifts were being grabbed by others, not because they ran too much. That's a silly thing to claim. The present drop system they have now is unbalanced; as I've said before, an outpost filled with people who are angry/upset over gift distribution can't be in the sprit ANet intended. If five people are happy while 50 or more are swearing and whining, the atmosphere is ruined.

I go to the events to have fun and socialize. The gifts and hats are nice, but not necessary. If it's gonna put everyone in a foul mood, what's the point of having a party? On Wintersday, people cheered and modeled their hats and talked excitedly about seeing their presents. Some people even gave away Elf Tonics so we'd eventually form a Riverdancing line surrounded by gifts. It was fun. The last festival was a dead, silent, ugly heat punctuated by the foul language of people who'd been sniped.

If a player leaves/goes AFK and doesn't get their gifts, then yes, let someone else gets them. I have no issues with an free-for-all once everyone's gotten a decent share. But when people are present and ready to receive items and get nothing, there's a problem. I'd even suggest putting the gifts right in the inventory, but then that takes out the fun of seeing presents with your name on them fall from above.

Your gifts, as on Wintersday, would land somewhere near you. If you move, your area of drops moves too.
